Hogback Heaven

On Day Three of this week’s trip, we leave Green River, but will remain in Utah the remainder of the day. We roll through Hanksville, then cruise fee-free through Capitol Reef National Park, and on to Torrey, our home for the evening.

But there’s still a lot of riding to do, so we press on to Utah’s famed Highway 12, which is Number Three on my all-time Top Ten list.

Highway 12 is known for its hogback section, over which I have a love-hate relationship. It scares me to death, yet I continue to ride it – and it hasn’t killed me. Yet.

The sign says it all.

We ride Highway 12 over the hogback to Escalante, and after a break, decide it was so fun we should turn around and do it again, in the other direction.

At the end of a 233-mile day, we return to Torrey, where we’ll stay at the Broken Spur Inn, dine at the Broken Spur Steakhouse, and call it a day.

At the Broken Spur Inn, you can stay in one of these Conestoga Wagons. It’s glamping with a view of Capitol Reef National Park.

And now, a few pics from today’s ride.

It was already quite warm in Capitol Reef by 10:30 this morning.
On the hog back, sharp curves ahead. Yippee!
Clarence finds time for some nature photography.
All ready for some hogback fun.
Let’s roll!
Banana snacking.
Temps were in the 90s when we arrived in Escalante, so I hydrated with a pins colada slushy.
This is Paisley, a 12-year-old local girl from Escalante, showing off her KTM 120 cc bike.
On our way back to Torrey, we pulled over to appreciate the views and scenery.

Dinner at the Broken Spur Steakhouse, part of the Broken Spur Inn, where we’re staying. Note Walter Jr’s new companion. Picked her up at the Broken Spur gift shop.
Clarence finishes off dinner with a peach 🍑 cobbler and vanilla ice cream.
Walter Jr and his new girlfriend call it a night. See you tomorrow.
