Jim, who has show biz in his genes, was born in Hollywood and grew up on the beaches of Southern California. So it was natural that he went to USC, where he taught scuba diving, graduated in 1977 with a business degree, then served five years in the US Navy. Jim began his Navy stint in underwater demolition — who doesn’t like to blow things up? — and then learned the fine art of navigation, using a sextant and dead reckoning. Those could be helpful skills on a Harley trip.

After serving as an Admiral’s Aide, Jim left the Navy as a lieutenant, and joined Price Waterhouse, a large multinational accounting firm. He stayed there for 30 years, including two decades as a partner, until retiring in 2011. During his time at what eventually became PricewaterhouseCoopers, or PwC, Jim was an Audit Partner, working with small entrepreneurial tech companies, helping them through the process of going public. His last PwC gig was heading up sales and marketing in the Western US. Sell it, Jim!

A sailor since his teens, Jim has a 42-foot cutter-rigged sailboat, Wanderer, that he keeps at the San Diego Yacht Club. Jim and his wife, Terri, are wanderers, too and he likes to remind the rest of us: not all who wander are lost. Jim and Terri had been living in San Diego forever, when they were on a trip touring the west, drove through Glenwood Springs, Colorado, stopped for the night, stayed another day, and another – and finally decided to move there. They’ve been in Colorado since 2013, but often visit their California family to re-connect with their roots.

Terri is Jim’s high school sweetheart. They’ve been married 43 years, and have two adult kids and four grandchildren; the most recent (Bennett James Arnold) was born on 2-2-22!

Jim, who values the concept of service over self, has always been big on giving back to his community. He served on the Glenwood Springs City Council, and on the City’s Financial Advisory Board. Jim’s a volunteer forest ranger, has taught business classes at Colorado Mountain College, and is on the boards of both the Rotary Club (he’s the President) and the 100 Club — a group for active senior couples in Glenwood Springs whose ages total at least 100. Since Jim’s 70, the age part is a no-brainer.

Being active is a big part of Jim’s life. He bicycles, skis, rafts, hikes — and hunts and shoots. He calls it “all the typical outdoor Colorado stuff.” Jim rides a red 2007 Harley Softail Custom, which he bought in 2007 after 25 years of motorcycling inactivity. In the winter of 2010, Jim rode cross-country, by himself, discovering the hard way that riding in the snow isn’t much fun. Californians think it’s always gonna be sunny!

Jim rode with me in 2019, but missed the 2021 ride to Sturgis due to the expected arrival of a new grandchild. He rejoined the posse again in 2022, and made a cameo appearance for two days of the 2023 ride as well. Jim joined the party again in 2025.
