Visiting #7 on My Top Ten List: Trail Ridge Road

We leave Cheyenne and head for Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Two hours later, after a detour due to wildfire, we arrive Estes Park, the eastern entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Here, we begin our ride on Trail Ridge Road, #7 on my Top Ten List. Trail Ridge Road winds its way for 48 miles, with a maximum elevation of 12,183 feet, until reaching Grand Lake, the western entrance to the park. From Grand Lake, we continue south to overnight in Winter Park, Colorado’s longest continually operating ski resort, owned by the City of Denver, and operated by Alterra Mountain Company.

And now, today’s photos.

Temps were in the mid-80s by mid morning.
Soon, we rolled into Rocky Mountain National Park, amid threatening skies, that fortunately didn’t carry through on their threat.
Walter Jr loved the fresh Colorado mountain air. It was his first time in Colorado since I rescued him from the gift shop at Glacier National Park.
Just inside the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Ready to head up to 12.100 feet.
Looking down the valley toward Estes Park.
Steady, buddy. It’s a long way down.
The skies continued to threaten.
Pretty sure Mark is cleaning out some decaying ear wax.
Above the tree line, at about 12,000 feet, Walter Jr keeps an eye out for traffic.
After 16 days on the road, still no need for rain gear.
Walter looks out over the Gore Range.
One final burger, and it’s time to come home.
